Halloween: wrap-up and final photos!

Here we are, then! Here are the last bits of my Flame Princess costume! It's going to be a little stream-of-consciousness, I'm afraid, but here's what I've got:

First-off: the overdress. The overdress was the stuff of nightmares. A sewed garment that has to fit?! UGH.

My amazing artist friend ended up having an enormous amount of perfect orange fabric in her basement, so I sponged a couple yards of that off her and had at it. I used the under-dress as the stencil (for the neckline, mostly, but also the rough shape of the dress), traced half, cut the back out in one piece, cut the front out in two pieces, and went crazy pinning things together.

This is the back (folded at the middle line)

Pretty fabric!

This stuff is MAGIC.

Pinning like my life depends on it. Also, I used that to figure out the placement of the hooks and eyes (I decided I needed 5 to keep the whole front closed). A hidden zipper would have been better.

I'm still 90% convinced sewing machines are witchcraft.

From there, it was just a matter of the trim -- and alas, here is where I completely failed you, and neglected to get good photos. All I did was buy some glittery ribbon from Michael's and hot glue it on, though, cutting the shapes out and piecing them together as I went.

The gems I got from Allstarco, and they were a great size. I tried sewing the one at the neckline of the dress onto the under-dress (or rather hot-glued to a scrap of fabric that I tacked to the neckline of the under-dress), but it just didn't look right; I ended up ripping that out and hot-gluing it to the left front panel of the overdress.

Attaching the one to my forehead was a disaster, because surprise! my stash of spirit gum had disappeared. So I tried Elmer's, which melted off my head halfway through the party, and then improvised with strips of the adhesive parts of bandaids after that. I should have just used double-sided tape if I couldn't find the spirit gum, but it all worked out in the end.

Anyway, here's what y'all are here for: photos from the party!

The full posse: Lady, me, Gunter, Ice King, Marceline, and of course Finn and Jake.

So there you have it! I might try to make a single comprehensive entry with all the how-I-did-its in one place, if anyone's interested, but here endeth the Halloween saga. I'll try to keep updating with new and exciting endeavors now that I'm back in the habit of writing here again!
